Side Gig/Hustle: Feed Your Soul, Wallet & Professional Self

Chances are you are like me and have a side hustle/gig or may be considering one. As it turns out almost 50% of Americans have one according to Yahoo Finance in a 2019 report. Once my children got to a certain age I started tapping in to my creative side painting & creating home and office items in my art studio. It was and is a great escape for me and when I was going through a very difficult divorce in 2007 it was my refuge. I have continued on because I discovered the business and logical side of my brain works better when I am actively creating and tapping in to my inner artist.

#HBR posted a recent article online on the importance of developing a side gig as a way of developing new skills that expand your horizons and make you a more well rounded leader. The article titled “ The Strategic Side Gig ” by Ken Banta & Orlan Boston discusses the journey of one journalist turned executive and the importance of having a strategic #sidegig to learn a new skill or learn more about yourself. They talk about the importance of external engagement so as not to become so obsessively focused with your job & have such a single mindedness mentality.

They point out its not about attending another industry event or conference but rather a strategic side gig promotes exposure to different people, information & cultures. These “gig”s can range from serving on a local non profit board, publishing, teaching fellowships and other suggestions.

Whether your #sidehustle or #sidegig is to enrich you personally or professionally is up to you or it can really serve to do both. If you have one great & whatever the reason, whether it be for some extra side cash, filling a creative need or immersing yourself in a cause that is out of your comfort zone the benefits can be far reaching & rewarding.

Check out my latest #Facebook post where I give a preview of my #sidehustle.
