Sometimes it’s Ok to go Backwards

We always say put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward. Most of the time this is true but is it ever advisable to go backwards? I say yes! Why you ask, because coming back to your roots or coming around full circle to where you started can put you back to a grounded place arming you with a balanced perspective to get back going in the direction you were intended to from the beginning.

Sometimes life takes over at such a frenetic pace full of different paths, detours and unforeseen alleys that we lose sight of ourselves trying to navigate the unknown. When you become deeply lost or confused starting over from where you first began can take you back to a time or place that realigns your ability of getting back on the right road after veering off course.

When I first moved to North Carolina it was before the days of smart phones, google maps and driving apps to get from point a to point b. I was in sales in those days driving all around the state with one hand on the wheel and another holding a map with dots I made pinpointing my destination for the day. Some days I would start out with a clear path of how to get where I wanted to be but one wrong turn and I was off track driving in circles losing my way wondering how I got so far off from where I had planned to be that day.

When these situations happened I would diligently study the map to find a back road or alternate route that inevitably was out of the way adding time to my day when all I wanted to do was get where I was going and get home after a long day. Later on when these days of getting off track to get to my final destination would happen I started going back to where I got off track and would start over. It essentially put me back in the best place to rethink the route I had mapped out to end up where I wanted to be.

As the years have gone by I find that in my own life this can be a very effective tool. After many detours, alternate routes, wrong turns and dead end roads I have found that going back to the beginning can simply be the better strategy even though you may find a road less traveled that occasionally is filled with interesting discovery.

As it seems, sometimes the road less traveled can also turn out to be a rocky unpaved road with a dead end where no one put up a sign to warn you. Feeling lost is not a great feeling but what is even worse is getting on a road to nowhere and then ending up in a place you never wanted or intended to go.
