Style Icons: Past & Present

So I was thinking, depending on your age the people that come to mind as style icons may vary wildly but as icons go they typically transcend time. So, that being said, here we go. First of all how does one actually become a style icon? I asked myself this same question and what do they have in common. Here is what I came up with as an answer to that question.

To me style icons put a unique stamp on a way of dressing, styling an outfit, redefining acceptable dressing protocols & creating a personal brand that is celebrated, imitated but rarely duplicated because of the intangible mystique each icon flawlessly possesses.

From my vantage point the top style icons that have influenced the fashion world in the last 50+ years up to present day would include the following but I am sure there are many more that would qualify for this status.

Here is The Pink Soapbox list:

Jackie Kennedy Onassis- Duh! Who can ever deny or question her as the queen of style from the 1960’s all the way to her death in the mid 90’s. From pillbox hats, to her oversized black “JackieO” shades and shift dresses everything she wore was an instant classic.

Lee Radziwill- As Jackie O’s sis she was her own kind of icon in her own right. Classic, clean lines with timeless looks and has a line of handbags now named after her in the Tory Burch collection. You can check them out at www.toryburch.com

Princess Diana-You knew this one would be on the list. With her polka dots, tiaras, exquisite ball gowns and hats she put a fresh face on the monarchy in the 1980’s. Of course we all know how this story ends but may we never forget her style, grace and contributions to fashion and humanity.

Audrey Hepburn- Who can ever forget the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” , those black cat glasses and that little black dress. She defined a time of classic and elegant style that again is well,...... timeless.

Coco Chanel- Ok, Is there anyone that loves fashion that doesn’t love the classic quilted Chanel handbag. Of course there are many other iconic pieces we can attribute to Coco but she is a standout because her vision for her brand has stood the test of time.

Grace Kelly- Actress turned princess brought real glamour from the big screen of Hollywood to a small country named Monaco years ago and made every little girl want to become a princess. She made it look easy marrying her prince while she floated around elegantly in her scarves and couture French fashion.

Sarah Jessica Parker- Whether she is Carrie Bradshaw or just playing herself and her own brand SJP she’s our girl. From Manolo’s to Prada & her own designs in between SJP has it going on as a style icon through the years. Check out her website at www.sjpbysarahjessicaparker.com

Kate Middleton- The Duchess of Cambridge was an everyday girl growing up in England who met her prince, married and seemingly living happily ever after. Since walking down the aisle at Westminster Abbey she has also strutted her way to iconic style status with her classic looks, perfectly coiffed hair and a humble yet regal aura that continues to radiate brighter with each passing year.

Lily Aldridge-Lily is an American model known for being a Victoria Secret Angel from 2010 to 2018 but has nudged her way to icon status with her 5 million followers on #instagram and the launch of her own fragrances. She is of this day and knows fashion backwards and forwards all the while staying true to her social media followers keeping them engaged with her posts highlighting classic style and beauty mixed in with real world everyday personal posts. Follow her @lilyadridge

Gigi Hadid-What more is there to say about a super model that has 53 million #instagram followers. That in itself gives her iconic style status. She is a runway goddess making the most absurdly expensive couture looks gain instant “gotta have it “ status. Follow her @gigihadid

I hope you enjoyed my rundown of the style icons I picked from the present and the past. If your personal favorite didn’t make the list leave a comment on who you would add and why. I love to hear what others are thinking & be sure to tell me why you find them iconic.
